Modular-1 by David Buckley

What made it work - Jupiter Ace and Interface Board

The plywood chassis was made by David Joseph aproximately to my drawings. He worked at the Poly of North London and made Dolls' Houses in his spare time.
The Interface Board was made by Basil Butcher a then Director of InterGalactic Robots (IGR).
The Jupiter Ace keyboard was cut off and was attached for programming by a cable.
I made the rear switch panels and added the internal wiring and made Modular-1 work.
On first test the stepper motors used were not powerful enough and since we needed to demonstrate it a couple of days later I fitted the Como Pile DC Motors and gearboxes which meant sawing off part of the rear fenders. It was either that or having a robot that didn't run. Colin Freestone another Director of IGR then wrote the Forth software.
Later I found two motors which would fit but IGR thought Modular-1 was too ambitious and I started work on Zero-2 so the new motors were never fitted.

The LHS top panel has a BBC-B type Serial socket, 2x8 IDC socket for the remote Ace Keyboard, and Power and Charger sockets.
The LHS bottom panel has keys for [0/Delete] and [Shift], Power on/off switch, and power LED.
The RHS top panel has TV/video out, Ear and Mic sockets.
The RHS bottom panel has blue keys for [Space], [Return] and white keys for [L],[O],[A],D].
So programs can be loaded and run without the external keyboard.

The grey 'lips' at the front (see main page) are dummy plug-in Program-Cartridges.
The empty space at the back was for a plug-in Pen-unit to draw Turtle-Graphics'.
The darker grey plates round the sides are bump sensors.
The dark rectangle on top was for a connector for plug-on 'hats'.
